10 DIY patio projects for summer entertaining

Summer entertaining outdoors is a great way to relax and connect with nature, family and friends.  It doesn’t have to be high style.  The best outdoor gatherings are casual so everyone  feels welcome.  Here is a collection of fun DIY projects to get your patio ready for summer entertaining.  Relax.  Have some fun.  Slow down and connect with those you love.

1.  Wire Basket Table

I love this wire basket table from A Shade of Teal.  It’s a simple way to add your favorite color to your outdoor furniture collection.  It provides a practical space for a cocktails or appetizers and it won’t break the bank.

2.  Tabletop Concrete Fire Bowl

A flickering flame always relaxes  a crowd.  Even if the temperature is steamy, a small flame creates a comfortable atmosphere that gets the conversation flowing.  What a great way to connect with your kids.  What’s going on at school?  What do they love or find challenging?  How can you support them?  This DIY Concrete Fire Bowl project can be found at The Hunker.

3.  Window Space Divider

In urban and suburban environments, privacy can be limited.  Create a space divider or privacy screen using old windows.  Here’s a great example from Apartment Therapy.  The addition of plants and hanging planters helps to soften the atmosphere, creating a more natural space.  You could even frost the windows with a Glass Frosting Spray Paint for additional privacy without blocking out the light.

4.  DIY Wood Latern

Even during hot, steamy summer nights, the flicker from a candle creates a relaxed and comfortable ambiance that leads to real, authentic conversation.  If the thought of fire makes you melt, try this great DIY lantern from 100 Things to Do.  Use battery powered candles to create ambience without the heat.

5.  Solar Chandelier

Lighting is critical when dining outdoors and appropriate lighting is important in setting the mood.  Imagine an outdoor gazebo dining table or a relaxed seating area cocktail table lit by an outdoor chandelier.  Get your salvage treasure search underway.  Here is a  great and cost-effective lighting solution from the Diva of DIY.  For this chandelier, grab an old chandelier and add solar lights.

6.  Espalier Fruit Tree

I am obsessed with formal gardens and would love to have fruit trees.  Unfortunately, we don’t have enough space or sun.  Check out this clever solution from Garden Therapy.  Espaliered trees not only require minimal space, but they add an elegant look to any garden or patio.  For instructions check out this great Espaliered Tree reference.

7.  Decorative Wreath

Wreaths look so great at the front entrance of a home.  They add color and character.  My dilemma is that they often cost over $100.  As beautiful as they might be,  I have a hard time justifying spending that much money on front door decor.  I love the look and low budget of this DIY project from The How to Mom.  A simple base that can be embellished to reflect your personal style.

8.  Chevron Trellis

Climbing plants are an easy way to add color and texture to a boring space.  I love the chevron trellis from Remodelaholic.  It creates unique angles and interest that your standard ‘big box’ trellis can’t provide.

9.  Wine Caddy

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like my patio was created for relaxing and on many occasions a glass or two of wine is involved.  I love this rustic wine caddy project from Shanty 2 Chic.  This would make a great gift for the hostess of summer BBQ party.  You can even personalize it with a Sharpie marker or some paint.

10.  Monogram Planter

Adding character to a front entry can be challenging.  The monogram planter from Ellery Designs adds color and personalization.
